Ophthalmic World Leaders
How Mentorship Turns Into Genuine Connection at OWL
At OWL, we are constantly seeking ways to drive impact and advance diversity in leadership across the ophthalmic space. One of our most exciting initiatives is the OWL Fellows Program, which pairs rising leaders with established industry veterans to foster mutual growth, share experiences, and elevate underrepresented voices.
How Mentorship Turns Into Genuine Connection at OWL
So, what does being an OWL Fellow actually look like in practice?
To answer that, we asked Carla Mack, a mentor from our Fellows Class of 2024, and her mentee, Katie Sigg, to reflect on their shared experience. For both women, the true value of the program was found in the authentic relationship they built with one another.
"Reflecting on what was most meaningful, I would say it was the genuine friendship that blossomed between Katie and I," Carla shared. "Our connection went far beyond professional exchanges. We found ourselves sharing not only work experiences but life moments as well."
Katie wholeheartedly agreed, noting that the most meaningful part of the program was having a true champion in her corner. "Honestly, it was Carla herself," Katie said. "She was always there. In the wins, and in the harder moments when I needed help navigating something difficult. She never let me settle. She pushed me to think bigger and strive for greatness."
Both women expected a formal, structured arrangement but were pleasantly surprised by how organic their communication became. Their scheduled check-ins quickly evolved into a natural rhythm of spontaneous, real-time conversations.
"Katie and I were willing to be vulnerable and really let our guards down," Carla explained.
"Being that open with someone at her level in the industry gave me something I didn't expect: real confidence," Katie shared. "I walked away believing I belonged in rooms I used to talk myself out of."
Beyond the personal connection, the mentorship yielded tangible career results. During the program, Katie learned how executives make decisions, sharpened her communication skills, and connected with other Fellows in her cohort. She even earned a promotion, an achievement she directly credits to Carla's ongoing guidance.
And while their formal time in the program has ended, their connection has not. They continue to check in on all aspects of life, proving that the OWL Fellows Program creates career-impacting relationships that last long after the official timeline wraps up.
As Katie puts it: "If you're even considering applying, do it. You will not regret it. This program changed my life in the best way possible!"
